meet sela patrice.

Hello, my name is Sela (say-la) and I’m a NY-based birth doula, certified with the National Black Doula Association ( https://www.blackdoulas.org/ ). A birth doula is a trained professional that provides emotional and physical support to pregnant women and their partners. I am an advocate, coach, and resource for the community. I am also a trained lactation support counselor with Birth Day Presence ( https://birthdaypresence.com/ ), a trained herbal therapist ( https://hoodherbalism.com/ ), a member of NYC Birth Village ( https://www.nycbirthvillage.com/ ), and a Childbirth Educator in training with CB International ( https://childbirthinternational.com/ ).

I became a birth doula to honor motherhood. Throughout my life, women and mothers have been who I hold closest to my heart. With their generosity for love and spirit in a melting pot of cultures, I was a baby who was raised by a village. Through my work as a doula I aim to help women in all corners feel confident in their motherhood and to be apart of their village. Small and large families however the shape and size, everyone deserves quality birth support. My life has been called into this work and I am here to do my duty!

my birthing philosophy.

Every birth experience is unique and personal to the individual. Though, I believe that no matter what, it should be something that feels possible. It is my job as a doula to make sure that my clients can have a peaceful birth, doing my best to help ease discomfort and stress. Being mindful of the mother’s physical, emotional/mental, and spiritual state as well as their partner’s to assist in making such a life-changing moment that much more manageable.

My birthing philosophy is simply that I believe mothers steer their own experience and whomever is on their team needs to be attentive and respectful of their wishes and decisions. I am there as a guide to advise on various outcomes, risks, and benefits of their choices so they can feel comfortable and confident in how they are choosing to birth. I do not ever make decisions for them nor do I allow my personal opinions to affect my professional care for my clients.

I listen; I care; I advocate.
